Coenzyme Q10 and L-carnitine Supplementation for Weight Loss

Obesity is a major global health concern associated with metabolic, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and neoplastic disorders. Recent evidence suggests that mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and chronic inflammation contribute to obesity pathogenesis, highlighting coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and L-carnitine as potential therapeutic supplements. This review evaluates the evidence supporting their roles in weight management. Preclinical studies demonstrated that CoQ10 supplementation improved lipid metabolism, reduced adipose tissue inflammation, oxidative stress, and fat accumulation in obese animal models. Clinical findings showed reduced CoQ10 levels in obese individuals, although evidence for direct weight-loss effects remains inconsistent. Conversely, CoQ10 has shown benefits in improving metabolic comorbidities such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. L-carnitine promotes mitochondrial fatty acid β-oxidation and may enhance metabolic regulation through PPAR-γ activation and anti-inflammatory effects. Meta-analysis of 37 randomized controlled trials demonstrated significant reductions in body weight, body mass index, and fat mass following L-carnitine supplementation. Overall, CoQ10 and L-carnitine may support obesity management, particularly when combined with dietary, exercise, or other weight-loss interventions.
