In conjunction with the launching of PICO 7, Kalbe Academia presents a scientific event with the topic: Surgical Site Complication in Closed Incision: “A Hidden Problem?” held on May 03-04, 2025 at Park Hyatt, Jakarta. By presenting speakers who are experts in their fields, this event offers a variety of interesting topics that discuss modern wound care, especially in post-operative wounds.

This scientific activity presented 4 international speakers, including Dr. Ravi Bashyal from University Health System, Chicago, USA, one of which discussed “Surgical Site Complication Prevention”, where based on the data presented that the use of NPWT was proven to improve the outcome of wound healing in closed wounds, and Dr. Ravi emphasized the importance of preventing wound infections, “We can treat once the problem starts, but it's better to risk stratify and treat prophylactically: Stop it from happening in the first place.” In this case, besides reducing the risk of infection, the use of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is also more cost-saving for patients. NPWT is a wound care method that uses negative pressure to aid wound healing.

The next session was presented by Dr. Gayathri Karthik Nagesh from Manipal Hospitals Old Airport Road, India, who discussed “Risk Stratification Strategies in Surgical Practice”. Dr. Gayathri said that the purpose of risk stratification is to try to accurately measure a person's risk status using subjective and objective data that helps in developing an appropriate treatment plan, thereby reducing the risk of complications including surgical wound infections. Another interesting topic was “Complex Case Discussion: How I Handle with NPWT” presented by Dr. Kunalan A/L Ganthel Annamalai from Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

At the end of the event, there was also a workshop or demonstration on the use of PICO 7. The participants, who were doctors from various departments and agencies, were enthusiastic about learning how to use the tool and asked various questions about PICO 7.

Information about PICO 7.

PICO 7 is sNPWT (single negative pressure wound therapy) whose purpose of use is to compress the wound, so that wound healing will be better. The mechanism of action is to protect the scar from microbial contamination, improve tissue perfusion, increase lymphatic flow, which will also have an impact on reducing edema in the area around the wound, besides that the mechanism of action of PICO 7 can also increase the closure of surgical scars so that it will reduce lateral tension on the wound.

PICO 7 uses airlock system technology in its dressing, and interestingly, although the concept used is NPWT, PICO 7 comes without a canister so that it can be simpler and easier to use. The airlock technology used will allow sNPWT to absorb up to 300 cc of fluid from the wound area without worrying about the risk of maceration in the area covered by the dressing, because 80% of the absorbed fluid will evaporate so that the moisture in the wound area is maintained. It is hoped that the presence of PICO 7 can help clinicians to prevent complications in surgical wounds, one of which is infection, especially in patients with a high risk of infection in surgical wounds.
